Kenya Railways Adds More Madaraka Express Trips to Meet Rising Demand

Published

Kenya Railways has announced more trips of the Madaraka Express Passenger Service to cater to the influx of passengers that is likely to be witnessed during the weekend.

On Thursday, November 13, the state-owned rail operator announced that the additional services would be operating on Friday, November 14, and Saturday, November 15, 2025, during the Mombasa-Nairobi and Nairobi-Mombasa services.

This move will help to safeguard the easy movements of Kenyans over the busy weekend, when most of the trains tend to be fully occupied beforehand.

Kenya Railways says that the extra Friday train will leave Mombasa at 9:45 a.m. and travel to Voi at 11:21 a.m. The train will depart Voi five minutes later, that is, at 11:26 a.m., and only arrive in Nairobi at 3:48 p.m. On Saturdays, the opposite journey will be running between Nairobi and Mombasa, where the capital will be leaving at 9:45 a.m.

The train will be arriving at Voi at 1.35 p.m., leaving at 1.40 p.m., and arriving at Mombasa at 3.36 p.m. The additional trains will avoid the overcrowding and offer more options to travelers who travel in and out of the coastal city.

The passengers are also advised to have their seats booked in advance by using official means like the Metickets site at www.metickets.co.ke. Through dialing, namely, *639#, or in any Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) station around the country.

The Kenyan Railways once again pointed out that these are the only booking sites that are accepted by the corporation. The announcement comes after increasing complaints of fraudulent websites that purport to be official SGR booking websites.

Only a week before, Kenya Railways had made a public notification to alert Kenyans about the hoaxes on TikTok and other social networks.

On November 6, the company warned that fraudsters were using counterfeit TikTok accounts to impersonate Kenya Railways.

The officials claimed that these accounts were established to defraud unsuspecting travellers into paying fake ticket prices. It is important to note that this information is run on the website of fraudsters who are out to deceive unsuspecting individuals in society.

The company said that it does not have an official TikTok account and that any accounts that purport to represent it on that platform are not genuine.

The warning also mentioned a number of fraudulent websites that would be running on various platforms.

One of them was the open Facebook group called SGR Online Booking Service, with approximately 19,100 followers, and another secret group called SGR-Madaraka Express Booking Solutions with approximately 9,100 followers. Both groups were discovered to be operated by people who collect the money of the passengers under false pretenses.

Kenya Railways observed that the fraudsters usually focus on passengers who are not aware of the official booking system in place, more often than not, first-time flyers or passengers who are seeking alternative methods fast, when the official tickets are unavailable.

The scammers usually offer low fares or expedited booking, using which the victims will simply lose their money.

As a way of safeguarding the citizens, the company has called on Kenyans to be vigilant and ensure information is verified through its channels of communication.
