Mosiria Alleges “Mbavu vs Majembe Vurugu Challenge” Fight Was Fixed as Obinna Fires Back

A fresh controversy has rocked Kenya’s boxing scene after Nairobi County Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, claimed that the highly publicized Vurugu Boxing Challenge main event was not genuine, but instead carefully pre-arranged.

The match, which took place on Saturday night at the Kasarani Indoor Arena, featured Portifas “Majembe” Odipo facing off against Ferdinand “Mbavu Destroyer” Omondi.

The fight ended in dramatic fashion when Odipo was declared the winner via unanimous decision after the referee stopped the contest in the fourth round. While fans initially celebrated what appeared to be a decisive victory, Mosiria has since cast doubt on the authenticity of the bout.

In a strongly worded statement, Mosiria alleged that the fight had been orchestrated behind the scenes. He pointed fingers at event organizer Steve Thompson Maghana, popularly known as Oga Obinna, accusing him of manipulating the outcome while deliberately excluding him from the event.

According to Mosiria, the entire spectacle was a calculated setup intended to mislead boxing enthusiasts. He claimed that he had prior knowledge of irregularities surrounding the event, which influenced his decision not to attend.

In his remarks, he described the match as a “mchezo wa town,” suggesting it was more of a staged performance than a legitimate sporting contest.

Mosiria further argued that such events risk undermining the credibility of boxing in Kenya. He expressed concern that fans who had eagerly anticipated a fair and competitive match may have been deceived.

In addition, he warned that if such practices continue, they could deny upcoming boxers valuable opportunities to showcase their talent in authentic competitions. According to him, supporters may end up spending money on events that do not genuinely promote the sport or its athletes.

On the other hand, Oga Obinna has strongly rejected the accusations, dismissing them as unfounded and motivated by personal issues rather than facts. In a sharp response, he accused Mosiria of seeking attention and attempting to discredit an event he did not even attend.

Obinna claimed that Mosiria had previously reached out requesting tickets to the fight but was unsuccessful. He suggested that the criticism may have stemmed from frustration after being denied access. In his rebuttal, Obinna urged Mosiria to be honest about the situation instead of making public allegations.

The media personality maintained that the Vurugu Boxing Challenge was a legitimate initiative aimed at nurturing local talent and creating opportunities for young athletes.

He emphasized that organizing such events requires significant effort and should be supported rather than criticized without evidence.

Obinna also pointed out that Mosiria’s absence from the arena weakened his claims, noting that he, like many others who could not attend, followed the match online. He argued that it was unfair to question the integrity of the event without firsthand experience.

The dispute has since sparked widespread debate among Kenyan sports fans, with opinions sharply divided. Some supporters have echoed Mosiria’s concerns, calling for greater transparency in local boxing promotions. Others have sided with Obinna, praising the initiative for bringing attention to grassroots boxing and encouraging youth participation.

As the debate continues, the incident highlights broader issues within Kenya’s boxing industry, including the need for trust, accountability, and proper regulation.

Whether the claims are substantiated or not, the controversy has undeniably drawn attention to the sport, raising important questions about its future direction and the integrity of its competitions.
