Kenyan forward Albert Muema is steadily building a name for himself in European football, with his performances in Austria drawing increasing attention.
Currently plying his trade in Austria’s National League, Muema has spent the past three years sharpening his craft and delivering consistent results in front of goal. His scoring record—48 goals in 83 appearances—highlights both his efficiency and importance to his team.
The former Tusker striker now features for SCG Eckarstau, where he continues to demonstrate his attacking prowess. Recently, he participated in a training camp held in Lindabrunn, Austria, a facility known for hosting top-level teams, including the Austrian national side.
The camp provided Muema and his teammates with a valuable opportunity to test themselves in a highly competitive environment. Over the course of three days, the team played several friendly matches, and Muema once again proved his worth by finding the net twice.
The Lindabrunn facility is also familiar to Austrian international Phillip Mwene, a player of Kenyan descent who represents both the growing connection between the two nations and the potential for Kenyan footballers abroad.
Mwene, who was born in Vienna, has featured prominently for Austria at various levels and currently plays for Bundesliga club FSV Mainz. His journey reflects the increasing presence of players with Kenyan roots in European football.
For Muema, however, the journey to this point has been anything but straightforward. Now 33 years old, his rise in the game has been marked by determination and adaptability. He began his football career in Kenya with Ligi Ndogo, where he was part of a talented youth group that traveled to England in 2010 for the Keele Tournament in Manchester. That early exposure to international football laid a foundation for his future ambitions.
In 2014, Muema briefly trained with Tusker under coach Francis Kimanzi, gaining valuable experience at one of Kenya’s top clubs. Soon after, he made a significant decision to move to Australia, where he combined his education with football. This move proved to be a turning point in his career. While in Australia, Muema enjoyed success with Broadbeach United, helping the club secure silverware in the Coast Premier League as well as the National Premier League in Queensland in 2015.
His time in Australia also saw him represent several other clubs, including Eastern Suburbs FC, Wolves in Brisbane, Diamond Valley SC, and Brandon Park United in Melbourne. These experiences not only broadened his exposure to different playing styles but also helped him develop into a more complete forward.
Beyond traditional football, Muema has also showcased his abilities in futsal. He captained Kenya in their debut appearance at the Vienna World Cup, a tournament that featured teams from across Europe, Africa, and beyond. Competing against nations such as Austria, Albania, and Egypt in the group stage, Muema demonstrated leadership and skill on a different stage, further underlining his versatility as a player.
Today, Muema’s story is one of persistence and growth. From humble beginnings in Kenya to professional stints in Australia and now Austria, he continues to defy expectations and prove that talent, when combined with hard work, can open doors across the globe.
As he continues to perform in Europe, his journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring footballers back home who dream of making their mark on the international stage.
