Secure Your Affordable Home: Six New Government Housing Projects Announced

The Kenyan government has also stated that six new affordable housing sites will be added to the current Affordable Housing Programme (AHP), and the citizens are invited to start booking units via the official portal known as Boma Yangu.

This is another huge step in the government strategy of ensuring that more Kenyans have access to homeownership, as the announcement by the State Department of Housing and Urban Development was issued on Monday, November 3.

The statement further states that the new projects are as well among the commitments of the government to make sure that the whole of the country enjoys the benefits of the AHP. The notice had it that, in response to our efforts to ensure that the countrywide Affordable Housing Programme is covered, we are delighted to inform you that six more more projects can be booked on the portal Boma Yangu.

The six new housing projects to be introduced are:

Michinda Estate

Jogoo Road Phase 1

Embakasi Estate

Marigat Estate

Gatundu Estate

Kitengela Vet Estate

This growth will give more Kenyans chances to afford housing in different places signifying the determination of the government to minimize the housing disparity between urban and rural regions.

Affordable Housing Programme Yearly Report.

The Affordable Housing Programme has been increasing in momentum since its inception with the government still launching projects in various counties. Currently, it has 195,578 housing units in active construction within 44 counties and 111 constituencies. The government has gone on to state that the programme will shortly be implemented in all of the 47 counties with only Turkana, Marsabit and West Pokot having witnessed continued works.

The housing project is one of the pillars of the new administration of President William Ruto, whose intention is to offer decent and affordable housing as well as spur economic growth by enhancing employment in the construction industry.

Past and Current Projects and Objectives.

Given that the programme has been officially launched in 2022, a number of projects have already been delivered and transferred to beneficiaries. These include:

Buxton Phase One in Mombasa – 584 units.

Nakuru Bondeni Estate – 605 units

Boma Yangu Mukuru – 1,080 units

Boma Yangu Homa Bay – 110 units

Disciplined force housing – 792 units.

This is because 3,171 units have been already completed, and 4,888 units have been announced to be on sale in various parts of the country.

Institutional accommodation, especially among the students is not out of the scope of the AHP, even though it is confined to residential houses. To curb the problem of accommodation insufficiency in the universities and colleges across the country, the government has proposed 177, 686 student beds, which is equivalent to 50,767 units.

Funding and Economic Factor.

President William Ruto has recently commended the Kenyans to have come out in large numbers to support the programme and that the housing project has not been heavily financed with the use of external borrowing but in most cases with local resources. The President announced at an official visit to Ethiopia that the programme had leveraged in excess of $4 billion (about KSh518 billion) of local investments.

President Ruto says that two years ago we made a decision to restore the dignity of our people by giving them decent houses. Currently, we have 700,000 units of housing in the pipeline as well as already building 170,000 homes. Under this programme, Kenyans have through their own resources and not with debt, set up projects worth four billion dollars.

Renewing the National Vision.

Affordable Housing Programme is one of the major pillars of Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) by the government that works to enhance the living standards of low- and middle-income earners. In addition to the affordable homes, the project will also create employment opportunities to the local residents, favor the local contractors and boost the demand of the locally produced building materials.

The government is still rolling out the six new projects, Michinda, Jogoo Road, Embaksi, Marigat, Gatundu and Kitengela thus the government is still taking real steps towards its vision of having all the Kenyan living in decent and affordable houses.

With housing pipeline increasing, now more Kenyans will be able to visit the Boma Yangu portal to register, apply, and reserve units as another step to homeownership and financial security.
