Harry Maguire has committed his future to Manchester United after agreeing to a new contract that comes with a notable drop in his weekly earnings.
The club has confirmed that the experienced centre-back has signed a fresh one-year deal, which also includes the option for an additional year. His previous contract had been nearing its expiration, raising the possibility of him leaving on a free transfer this summer.
Talks over a renewal had been ongoing for a while, with financial adjustments forming a key part of the agreement.
According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Maguire has accepted a reduced salary, bringing his weekly pay down from £180,000 to somewhere between £100,000 and £120,000.
Since his high-profile £80 million move from Leicester City in 2019—a record fee for a defender at the time—Maguire has experienced ups and downs at Old Trafford.
Recently, however, he has regained importance in the squad under interim boss Michael Carrick. At 33, he has played a crucial leadership role in defence, particularly during injuries to Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martínez, helping the team remain competitive in the race for Champions League qualification.
Speaking after signing the extension, Maguire expressed pride in continuing his journey with the club. He described representing United as a great honour and highlighted his desire to keep building special moments with the fans. He also pointed to the squad’s ambition and belief, stating that he is confident the team’s best achievements are still to come.
Another factor in the club’s decision was the expected exit of Casemiro. With experience set to leave the dressing room, United prioritized keeping seasoned leaders like Maguire—provided new financial terms could be agreed.
Director of football Jason Wilcox praised Maguire’s professionalism and mentality, emphasizing his importance as both a leader and role model within a young and developing squad.
The agreement ultimately benefits both sides. Maguire had previously declined a £30 million move to West Ham United in 2023, as well as interest from AC Milan and Saudi side Al Qadsiah earlier this year. His preference was to remain in the north-west of England, where his family is settled.
For Manchester United, retaining Maguire ensures stability and experience at the back. He is also expected to play a key mentoring role for emerging talents such as Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven.
With Maguire’s future now secured for potentially two more seasons, the club can turn its attention to reinforcing other areas of the squad—particularly midfield and the left side—ahead of the upcoming transfer window.
