KenGen Issues Warning Over Fake Job Advertisement Offering 200 Positions

The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has again warned people against falling into a fake employment advert purportedly promising to employ over 200 people at the company, which is getting viral on WhatsApp and other social media networks.
On a press release dated November 8, 2013, KenGen termed the notice as fraudulent and advised Kenyans to be keen on accepting online employment adverts that seem to be posted by the firm.
The bogus advert that contained the logo and the letterhead of KenGen in an effort to make it look real, alleged that the power-generating company was hiring many staff members in different departments.
The forged document indicated that the company was purportedly trying to recruit several employees such as Maintenance Technicians (40), Electrical Technicians (30), Financial Accountant (12), Customer Service Representatives (15), Data Entry Clerk (10), Trainers of Trainees (18), Interns (20), Registered Nurses(8), Store Managers (15), drivers (10), security guards (18) and cleaners (22).
The advert proceeded to advise candidates who had an interest to apply through an email to kengen.vac@gmail.com with their application letter and credentials. before November 11, 2025.
This was a definite indication that the advert was not by the company, as the person used a Gmail account to send the email. KenGen issued a warning in a post that was shared on its verified social accounts, saying: Beware of fraudulent job adverts circulating on WhatsApp, purportedly by us. We post all the real job opportunities only on our official site, careers.kengen.co.ke."
KenGen stated that it does not employ personal or free email services like Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail to recruit employees.
The company also reminded people that it does not charge any application, registration, or interview at any level of its recruitment process. The company also encouraged Kenyans not to act on suspicious recruitment messages and forward them, and to solely use official communication channels in order to get updated on available job opportunities.
This recent notice is only months after KenyaGen was forced to make the same warning in June 2025, after another fake advertisement had spread that also promised to give out 200 jobs in various departments. By this time, the company had made it clear that it was not conducting any such recruitment drive and any new job would be publicized in a transparent manner.
All the vacancies are announced on our official webpage and the channels of communication. KenGen repeated its previous statement.
We also encourage members of the society not to act on information they have, but first confirm they are not being defrauded by fraudsters.
The Kenyan market has been targeted by employment scams that have become so prevalent that con artists lure unemployed young people and fresh graduates in need of employment opportunities.
Most of these fraudsters pretend to be well-known businesses and coerce unsuspecting people to part with their money to fraudulent registration, training, or interview charges.
This can be catastrophic to unsuspecting job seekers since most of them lose their hard-earned money and personal data to criminals. The professionals have repeatedly informed job seekers that they should always be wary and that all job-related information must be verified with the official company websites or trusted recruitment agencies.
The recent advisory issued by KenGen highlights that the company values integrity and transparency in hiring.
The state corporation has reminded people that all the real vacancies have to be announced in an official advertisement, which is published on the corporate site, as well as on verified social media platforms, including its page on X (previously Twitter), Facebook, and LinkedIn.
The company said that the members of the public should report any suspicious job offers claiming to be offered by KenGen to the closest police station or through the official channels of communication that it uses.
KenGen ended by assuring the Kenyans that it is committed to sound and open recruitment processes, and that real opportunities in the organization are never charged or limited to anyone who qualifies to get them.
"Do not fall prey to scammers. The company cautioned that one has to ensure that a job advert is genuine before proceeding to apply. KenGen appreciates the confidence of its people and will go on protecting its name against fraud.
